Well we’re only days away from the Trade Deadline and the Cavs are on the phone lines again trying to pull off another move to acquire another 1st Round pick, but this one is a unprotected lottery pick. Now last year we all know what happened to the unprotected lottery pick they got last year, it turned into Kyrie Irving. Hoping lighting will strike twice, the Cavs are being very active and hopefully can close in on a deal.
But the real question is, in this draft who in their right minds would give up a lottery pick? Well I think I have a few teams in mind who would do this.
Sacramento Kings- One trade is being floating as this which I can’t buy, but if so my god.
Cavs get- John Salmons, Marcus Thorton and the 1st Round Pick
Kings get- Antwan Jamison and a few other pieces
Okay let me say this, WHAT IS SACRAMENTO THINKING? Okay I understand John Salmons, but Marcus Thorton? The same man who has proven to be a big scoring threat? Add the 1st Rounder there, are you freaking nuts? Whoever the GM is should be fired on the spot for that. I mean if this pick turns into let’s say even the 4th or 5th pick, you’re looking at an Andre Drummond, Michael Kidd-Gilchrest or Harrison Barnes. Imagine this lineup:
PG- Kyrie Irving
SG- Marcus Thorton
SF- Harrison Barnes
PF- Tristan Thompson
C- Anderson Varejao
Wow, that’s a team right there. The Cavs should look into how they can get this kind of a deal done. I’m not saying get Thorton and whoever else, but get that pick. Makes that JJ Hickson deal now worth it.
Utah Jazz- This is a team that needs an Antwan Jamison and Ramon Sessions. Right now they truly lack a PG and a man guy who can spread the court. But Jamison in this case is more for cap space next year. Sessions though would fit because of Devin Harris being shopped around. The Jazz hold the Warriors 1st Rounder, Top 7 protected and the way it looks the Warriors would hold the #10 pick. Now is this the best trade for us? Not really, but it would give us 2 Top 15 picks and with the way the draft could go we could get OSU’s Jared Sullinger and Bradley Beal, filling the Cavs two biggest needs, another big man and a shooting guard. What a way to rebuild this team. Now what would the deal look like?
Cleveland recieves- SG Gordan Heyward and SF Jeremy Evans
Utah recieves- Ramon Sessions and a possible third team players
Houston Rockets- Now they are like the Cavs, borderline on the playoffs and need help. Would this become a Lottery Pick? No but it would be Top 15. Houston has a few interesting players that the Cavs could take including C Hasheem Thabeet, Courtney Lee, and Terrence Williams. Getting a Top 15 pick plus a few players too could be the best deal possible. Here is an example trade:
Cleveland recieves- C Hasheem Thabeet, SG Courtney Lee, PG Johnny Flynn, SF Terrence Williams and the pick
Houston recieves- PF Antwan Jamison, C Ryan Hollins, and SF/SG Christian Eyenga (painful as it is for me)
Simply put in this, I like Eyenga and see the upside, but this trade would be far better for the Cavs. All of these guys have either options or expiring deals. I think Thabeet is the key here. Once the #3 Overall by Memphis, he hasn’t been given an opportunity. If given an opportunity, he supposedly is the next Dikembe Mutumbo and who wouldn’t want that? Courtney Lee is a great shooter as we learned in 2009 against the Magic. Flynn is a good backup for Irving as we now could easily move Sessions. Williams brings a better all around SF to the table and probably opens the door for Cassipi to be moved in a deal with Sessions. In this case I’d also ask for a 2nd Rounder in 2013. Why? Two words, ZEKE MARSHALL. Akron may have lost the MAC Championship game tonight, but Zeke is a phenomenal Center who I want and I bet someone else wants. If LeBron wanted Norris Cole and brought him to Miami, you bet he’ll take Zeke Marshall who goes to the school he still supports financially to the Basketball program. The draft picks then could turn into big factor players for the Cavs down the road. And all of these players are tradeable if needed.
In the end, I want Sacramento because of the deal rumored. If not, I want Houston and then make the deal with Utah. That way you could get not 2, but 3 1st Rounders in this class. Use them how you want and completely rebuild this team. The Thunder didn’t go this deep and I can bet it could be their downfall because of depth. The Cavs would build depth and have the talent there to beat anyone.
